Free tools / SKU generator
SKU generator for every variant at once.
Most SKU tools make one code at a time. A product with four colours and five sizes needs twenty. List the options once and this writes every combination, warns you when two values would get the same code, and hands you a CSV.
No sign-up. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
What makes a good SKU
A SKU is your own code for one sellable thing: this product, in this colour, in this size. A good one can be read by a person in a warehouse aisle without looking anything up.
- Put the broadest thing first. Product, then colour, then size, so a sorted list groups itself.
- Keep it short. Eight to twelve characters is comfortable to read aloud and to key in.
- Avoid letters that look like numbers. O and 0, I and 1. If a value gives you one, set its code by hand.
- Never reuse a retired SKU. Old orders, returns and reports still point at it.
- It is not a barcode. A barcode number such as a GTIN identifies the product to everyone. A SKU is yours.
Setting a code by hand
Write a value as Large = LG and the code after the equals sign is used as it is. Do this when the automatic code clashes, or when your trade already has a standard abbreviation.
Questions
How are the codes chosen?
From the first letters of each value, preferring consonants, so Black becomes BLC and Blue becomes BLU instead of both becoming BL. Values of two words use their initials. Numbers are kept as they are.
What happens if two values get the same code?
The tool tells you which two, and which attribute they are in. Give one of them a code by hand, or allow more letters per code.
How many SKUs can it make?
Up to 2,000 in one go, which is more than most product ranges need. It tells you when a combination would go past that.
Is my product list sent anywhere?
No. The codes are worked out in your browser, and the CSV is made there too.
Want SKUs, stock and prices in one place?
OrbisVendor holds each product with its stock per location, and what is available is on hand minus what is already reserved.
