Free tools / Landed cost

Landed cost calculator.

What you paid the supplier is not what the goods cost you. Freight, insurance, duty and brokerage all land on top, and they do not land evenly. This spreads them across a mixed shipment and gives you a true cost per unit to price from.

THE SHIPMENT

COSTS SHARED BY THE WHOLE SHIPMENT

By weight suits heavy, cheap goods, where the freight bill follows the kilos. By value suits light, expensive ones.
The EU and the UK work this way. The US charges duty on the goods alone. Check the rule where you import.
How many of your currency one of theirs costs. Leave at 1 if you pay in your own. Freight and the other shared costs are in your currency.

What landed cost is

It is everything it took to get the goods onto your shelf: the price you paid, the freight, the insurance, the duty, and the broker and handling fees. It is the cost you should price from, and the cost your margin is really measured against.

landed cost per unit = (goods + share of freight and insurance + share of other costs + duty) ÷ units

Why the way you spread freight matters

Put a pallet of bolts and a box of sensors in one container. Spread the freight by value and the sensors carry nearly all of it, which flatters the bolts. Spread it by weight and the bolts carry it, which is closer to how the carrier charged you. Neither is wrong everywhere. Pick the one that matches what drove the bill.

Duty

Duty is a percentage set by the tariff code of each product, so it goes on each line. What it is a percentage of depends on the country: the goods alone, or the goods plus freight and insurance to the border. The rates and the basis are yours to look up; this calculator does the arithmetic.

Questions

Should sales tax or VAT on import be included?

Not if you can reclaim it. Import VAT you recover is a cash-flow cost, not a cost of the goods. If you cannot recover it, add it under the other shared costs.

What about currency?

Enter the rate you actually paid at, including your bank’s margin, not the rate on the news. The difference is a real cost.

Which spreading method should I use?

By weight when the freight bill was driven by weight or volume, by value for light, high-value goods and for insurance-heavy shipments, and by quantity when the items are much alike.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The sums are done in your browser.

Landed cost is not part of the product yet: its purchase orders do not model freight or duty. That is why this tool stands alone.
